I want to use the calendar to schedule renters for a vacation home. When someone clicks on the reservations page of my site, I'd like to have a form where they enter the date(s) they would like to rent the home and the form would access the calendar db and return either a message that the date is not available or redirect them to the reservations request form if the date is available.
I don't want the calendar to be viewed by the public, it's strictly for me to schedule renters.
I am using a Unix server running Apache.

TubaDave's 'NoOverlap' plug-in available at the Unofficial CalendarScript - Mods and Plugins site is designed to do that.
