Is there any plugin or way to modify the code to tie into a database? say sql or access?  the txt file storage is not a good solution for me since i would be syncing data in the backend with other apps such as exchange. i really like the frontend and could see myself deploying this on my site other than that.

No plug-in will be able to do that but the script *may* be able to be modified to use a relational database instead of its flat files. However, I think it would require extensive modifications (worthy of Matt Kruze himself) which would likely not be worth the effort.

If you really have to have a relational database backend, your best bet is likely getting a calendar script which uses one from the start. You may have to pay in the hundreds or thousands of dollars for such an application which does as much as CalendarScript does though.
