Category functionality being built into script itself?

I could have sworn that many months ago I saw a post from 2002 or 2003 in which the author said he'd be building category functionality into the program, thereby alleviating purchasers from having to implement a plug-in. Apparently, this is not yet reality. Is this on the horizon? Displaying events by category is a necessary function and something I'd expect in a commercial application like CalendarScript, as opposed to something that's developed on an open source basis.
