I have Chmoded only
calendar.pl = CHMOD 755
calendar_admin.pl = CHMOD 755

I have not changed the Chmod of the others files like you say and it works.
All is Ok and works great !

Is it really necessary to make all the others changes ? (calendarscript directory and ALL FILES AND DIRECTORIES UNDER IT = CHMOD 777.

Under some circumstances, it may not be necessary. For example, if your site runs CGIWRAP or if the web server is running as your user ID. For simplicity and easier trouble-shooting, I say to 777 all the files so there are fewer mistakes.

Since there are so many different environments and configurations out there, I have to document for the lowest common denominator and trust that those with different setups will know what they need to do for their own system.

It's up to you. I find it easy just to do:
chmod -R 777 calendarscript
and do everything in one shot!

With shell (telnet, SSH, etc.) access.

Not all web hosting plans include shell access and if not, your host's support may be willing to do it for you (although most would probably not be too thrilled having files and directories to chmod to 777). JMO

BTW. On the 5+ hosts I've installed the script one, it wasn't necessary once.
