Has anyone figured out a strategy for cleaning out old events?  Performance suffers the more events I add to the database, so I'd like to wipe out pre-2007 events as a whole.

Did you look at the 'DeleteOld' plugin at the Unofficial CalendarScript - Mods and Plugins site?
