I am trying to apply the 3.2 update to my existing calendar (3.1).  I tried by downloading the current calendar (named brun_calendar) and renamed it on my local system to freeport_calendar.  Then I changed the folder name in the config.txt file.  Now when I upload the freeport_calendar folder and change the permissions on all the appropriate files, I am not getting the daily events on my calendar anymore.  

How can I copy an existing calendar to a new folder and make it work so all my events in my original calendar are still visible?

Use the Manage Calendars administration function to add a new calendar choosing the Copy Calendar: option to duplicate an existing calendar.
