i would like admin screens to have same look as rest of site. do i have to edit many files or is there one place i can put all my header and footer stuff?

That would depend on exactly what layout changes are necessary. If just something at the very top and something at the very bottom of the pages, inserting your code at the top and bottom of the _header.html and _footer.html administration templates files (respectively) may do it.
