Hi All -

OK, my calendar is up and running here -
http://riverfrontsociety.com/cgi-bin/calendar.pl?month=12&calendar=RCS&month=11

I am pretty proud of myself, but would never have got it going without the help of the amazing Dan O.  I have a question, though - I know how to make a link open in a new window with regular Javascript in html, but don't know how to even begin with this script.    I would like to make the event description pop as a 340x400 (or so) new wndow.  Can I just use regular Java in my default.html?  What line do I edit to tell it to pop the event description? I was going to give it a shot without asking, but to be honest don't even know where to begin to put it.

I have tried to search the archives with no luck for the answer.

Thank you for any and all help!

Best,

Nora

That feature is part of the 'Meta Calendar' plug-in, you can find a slightly different implementation in the 'Hacks' section of the Unofficial CalendarScript - Mods and Plugins site and also a link to even another implementation in the 'Links' section of the site above under the 'Event Details mods' subcategory, titled "Using pop-ups with default template".

Maybe you can figure out what to do from those??

Good morning, Dan and everyone -

Thanks so much for the reply!  Ok, I tried the third choice first (the mod found under the Links category) and it worked beautifully for most of the events with one exception - if I have another link inside the event description, it opens THAT link in a small window, too, when I really want the new link to open in a full sized window.  An example is December 17th here -
http://riverfrontsociety.com/cgi-bin/calendar.pl?calendar=RCS&year=2005&month=12

if you click on "A Babaloo Christmas", it goes to another link back inside the main site with much more info and a way to sign up for the event.   Also on January 7th here -
http://riverfrontsociety.com/cgi-bin/calendar.pl?calendar=RCS&year=2006&month=1

for Trina Hamlin, I have links to both her site and the sponsor's site.

So then I went ahead and downloaded the MetaCalendar plug-in, which to be honest, for me was intimidating as could be! (But remember, I am a total newbie to PERL).  I had resisted it because it seemed to do things I did not need to do, in addition to having the pop-ups and it scare me : )  However, I figured what the heck, I could not really hurt anything as long as I backed up my default.html  I followed all the directions, but it did not seem to do anything?  I am sure I am missing something really basic, I really apologize, but I just don't know what it is!

The implementation in the Hacks section is cool, just not what I was looking for.

So I think I am ALMOST there using the first option above, but am not sure how to make the links inside the event descriptions open in full sized windows...

Thanks, Dan!

I think I may have answered my own question - Dan if you are out there, before you go to any trouble, let me try something and I will get back...

Nope - oh well.  A little light bulb went off after I sent my first reply and I thought since I could use HTML in the event description, I could just add the java script for the new pop up in the event_detail.html and then add the java command in the description field.  No go, though : (  Darn light bulbs!

** if I have another link inside the event description, it opens THAT link in a small window, too, when I really want the new link to open in a full sized window. **

Don't you mean it is opening that link *in the same smaller window* that the event details opened in? (That's the way it is working for me).

If you want links in the event details page to open in a new window, the easiest way is to add target="_blank" to the HTML code for their link. The link will open a new browser window when clicked but you will not have exact control of its size. That will be up to the user's computer and browsers' settings.

** I tried the third choice first and it worked beautifully **

Links from the main calendar are NOT opening in a new window for me.

Ok, duh.  I was over-analyzing - dazed and confused from the whole project I think.  It appears to be working exactly how I want it to.  (I had taken out the code earlier, Dan, which is why it was not working for you when you tried it, but I think it is working now.)

For those with the same question who will find this discussion searching the forum down the road, to summarize - I went with the info on the -  'Links' section of the site above under the 'Event Details mods' subcategory, titled "Using pop-ups with default template".

I chose this route because it was the easiest for me to implement immediately, though I have created another calendar specifically to play with plug-ins, including the MetaCalendar one.

I customized the event_detail.html file to match the look of the rest of the site, and for links that I wanted to pop in a new box, just added the target="_blank" command in the actual event description HTML in the calendar admin as Dan suggested.

Finally, I sent Dan O. a little cash using this link -

https://www.paypal.com/xclick/business=vah330%40excite.com&item_name=Meta+Calendar+Plug-in&cn=Optional+Comments&tax=0¤cy_code=USD

Why?  Because there is no way I would have EVER gotten this working without him and he is too far away for me to buy him dinner and drinks : )
