Files corrupted?

I have setup the calendar in a small local network and it was working fine until Tuesday. On Tuesday one of the user was entering some more datas and since then the calendar will not startup. I can see that calendar.pl is running and using 98% of the CPU but will die after 2 minutes. I can run the admin.pl script, create a new calendar and run it without any problem but i just don't like loosing the datas. Is there anyway to recover the datas? What can i do to prevent this from happening again?
I'm thankful for any tips or hint.
