I'd like to add events that are simply links to external sites; so I want to increase the amount of space available in the title field, so that I can put long URL <a href>'s in there.
Is that possible?

AFAIK you should be able to set the length of the title field by going to the Customize Event Fields administration section and adjusting the Maxlength value for the field in question.

I don't know how well that is going to work as the title is already used for a link in the calendar grids pointing to the Event View calendar pages.
