My customer told me searching for items in her calendar dont work.  She said the search that she gets from the "Edit Events" page under the administration account always works fine, but the search from the public view of the calendar does not work.

I went to try her example.  The first time, it worked fine. I went into the admin and looked at the search results under the  edit events page. I saw there she got more results than I got from the public search.

Then I went back to try the public search again. And there were no results. And now, no matter what I do, the search does not return any results. Only the very first time did it return results.

The page is:
http://www.leapinlizards.biz/freeport_calendar/calendar.cgi

And the search word I tried was "Sarah Winslow" in the title.

This is not a recurring event.

Can anyone tell me what might be wrong that the search did not work after I saw it worked the first time?

Does anyone else notice the same problem that I have described here?  Does the search work for anyone else?

Can anyone suggest how the search that you get on the admin "Edit Events" page could be made available to the public?  This is the search that always works fine.

Thanks for your help!

Bryan

** And the search word I tried was "Sarah Winslow" in the title. This is not a recurring event. **

The "Sarah Winslow" event on Feb. 7th and Feb. 15 are both event ID # 271 so they look like they may be a recurring event to me.

The "Sarah Winslow" event on Feb. 23rd is event ID # 443 and looks to have been first scheduled on January 12, 2007 so I have to assume it IS a recurring event as well.

Unfortunately, only the first occurrence of a recurring event will be displayed by the calendar's search function. (see One search works, another doesn't)

** now, no matter what I do, the search does not return any results. Only the very first time did it return results. **

I don't know what you're using for the search criteria, but try a wider date range... one that includes the first occurrence of those events. Event ID 271 looks to have an initial date of June 11, 2005!

** Can anyone suggest how the search that you get on the admin "Edit Events" page could be made available to the public? **

I'm afraid I do not know how those routines are different without going though all the files involved. A stop gap measure to get recurring events to display in the search results is to use the 'Split Recurring Event' plug-in from the Unofficial CalendarScript - Mods and Plugins site to convert recurring events to regular ones so each instance will be displayed in the search results.

What is the result of changing recurring events to non-recurring events?  If I do use the plug-in in the calendar, what will the person who has set up the calendar notice is different?   Is there any down-side to making the recurring events non-recurring?

Thanks

** What is the result of changing recurring events to non-recurring events? **

Each occurrence will become a single event enabling each to display in the search results. Each will also be able to be edited/deleted separately without effecting the other related events.

** what will the person who has set up the calendar notice is different? **

Other than a couple of extra user messages when first posted or converted, no.

** Is there any down-side to making the recurring events non-recurring? **

They'll take up a little more space in the data files. Events will also only be scheduled for a set period of time, not never-ending like is now possible for recurring events. That time period is configurable in the plug-in.

You can read a previous message about the plug-in in the previous forum message "SplitRecurrences plugin".

PS. The order of search results might also be more noticeable with more events being displayed. The results can be corrected to display in chronological order using the tip in the previous forum message "Event sort in Search View".

JFYI

Just one more question on the plug-in to make recurring events non-recurring.

Do I have to actually go to each event and select it and press a button to make the plug-in take effect?

Since my purpose for using this plug-in is to make the search work correctly for recurring events, it would be nice if I can apply it to all recurring events without having to actually select each one and press the button, etc.

Thanks

That is not possible with the plug-in I'm afraid. Any events you want converted will have to be manually edited or newly added... once the plug-in is installed and enabled. Sorry.
