I would like to be able to have a hyperlink go to the "default" template for my master calendar, but then for printing purposes, I would like to have a second hyperlink start the "simple" template. Is there a simple way to do this for a rookie?

All the templates the calendar can use have to be in the same template directory. You can not AFAIK use the 'default' templates with the calendar and also the 'simple' templates as they are contained in different directories.

The simplest thing to do would likely be to use the "Printable Calendar" template linked from the 'Templates' section of the Unofficial CalendarScript - Mods and Plugins site site.
